Two locals, Bangladeshi charged with RM3.3mil heist

KLANG: Three men, including a Bangladeshi, were charged in a Sessions Court with robbing a security van carrying RM3.36mil in Kuala Selangor late last month.

Lorry attendant S. Segar, 41, welder P. Balasegaran, 36, and Bangladeshi labour agent Sumon Miah, 41, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out to them.

They were jointly charged, together with several others still at large, for committing robbery while armed with a firearm, on a van bearing registration number WTU 4207.

The trio allegedly committed the offence in front of the Petronas station retail outlet in Ijok, Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor about 9.50am on Jan 28.

At the time, the van, belonging to Armour Security Systems (M) Sdn Bhd, was carrying RM3.36mil. The firearm was earlier seized from security guard Mohd Soffee Zakaria, 35.

They were charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and whipping, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahrul Ekhsan Hasim appeared for the prosecution, while the accused were represented by Gerard Lazarus.

Sessions Court judge Tasnim Abu Bakar disallowed bail and fixed re-mention of the case on March 20.

According to media reports, five men escaped with nine bags of money taken from a security van, after torching the vehicle at an oil palm plantation in Ijok.

The robbers earlier stole the van which had stopped at the Petronas petrol station in Ijok after seizing a shotgun belonging to one of the security guards.
