BEAUFORT: The number of flood evacuees here increased to 2,391 on Monday as the water level in Padas river rose to 9.20m, surpassing the 8.7m danger level. 

According to the spokesman of Beaufort flood operations room, the victims, comprising 700 families, were taking shelter at six relief centres in the district.

The relief centres are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Beaufort 3, which houses 781 victims, SMK Gadong (235), Kampung Kukut community hall (660), Dewan Baru Beaufort (607), Dewan Lumadan (98) and the surau in Kampung Sungai Bukau (10), he said. 

Earlier, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin visited and presented flood aid to the victims.

The flood situation in Tenom had improved with all relief centres in the district closed.
