KEMAMAN: Only residents who were truly affected by the floods were eligible to receive contributions, reminded Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He urged those who had received aid not to take advantage of the contributions that were allocated specially for flood-hit families.

These contributions included a set comprising a mattress, a pillow, a stove, a refrigerator and a 32-inch television set provided by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“We need to be sincere and responsible,” Shabery said after looking at the final preparation for the State-Level Flood Victims Contribution Presentation Ceremony in Padang Astaka, Cukai here yesterday.

Also present were Communications and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi and Putera 1Malaysia Club (KP1M) president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.

More than 14,000 affected families will be receiving contributions from the KP1M as well as the MCMC.

In Kuala Lipis, flood victims from six villages were forced to move to relief centres when water from three nearby rivers began to flood their homes.

Non-stop heavy rain for two days caused the Jelai, Tanum and Kechau Rivers to overflow, causing 138 members of 27 families to seek refuge at the centres.

In Kemaman, those who were evacuated following the flood on Friday returned home yesterday afternoon.

All three flood relief centres, namely at Balai JKKK Padang Kubu, Berek Kilang Padang Kubu and the Sungai Mas Officers’ House, had been closed.

In Kelantan, however, several areas have been hit by a second wave of floods.

A total of 897 people were relocated in Jeli and Tanah Merah yesterday evening.

Sungai Golok in Jenob, Jeli started overflowing in the afternoon, which caused residents in several villages in Ayer Lanas to be moved.

As at 8pm, the Golok river had risen to 24.77 metres, which is past the 23.5-metre dangerous level.

The other rivers are still at the critical level and rising slowly.

The victims from Jeli were evacuated to the Sungai Satan Umno building, Sekolah Kebangsaan Legeh, Kampung Gemang Mosque and Sekolah Menengah Ayer Lanas.
