Breaking through: Puteri Umno delegates applauding during the 67th Umno general assembly at PWTC in Kuala Lumpur.

TAKING the cue from their chief, Wanita Umno delegates are clamouring for greater recognition and want more seats in the next general election.

Contending the wing to be the backbone of the party, the delegates said it was time they were given a more prominent role within the party.

Malacca delegate Datuk Latipah Omar said the party supreme council must give greater recognition to Wanita Umno.

“We urge the Umno leadership to give the women a bigger role and involvement in the party’s hierarchy.

“This is justified as the Wanita wing is always committed and ahead of the rest in the party’s activities and work,” she said when debating the Wanita Umno chief’s policy address.

Latipah also urged the government to allow more women to head government-linked companies (GLCs) and government agencies.

Pahang delegate Juhanis Abd Aziz noted that Malaysia had yet to adhere to the Convention of Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which champions for at least 30% of women’s involvement in decision-making positions.

“We are far from having 30% women decision-makers in the country. We have heard of this pledge since the 1990s.

“I have seen so many Wanita chiefs come and go, yet till this day we have failed to implement this,” said Juhanis.

She also urged the Umno leadership to ensure that Barisan Nasional fielded at least 30% women candidates in the 14th general election to honour the pledge.

Sabah delegate Rosimah Zakaria said as a reward for the women’s sacrifice in the party, Umno must field more women candidates and appoint them into higher political positions within the party.

Johor delegate Haslinda Salleh added that Umno and the Barisan’s strength in the country must be attributed to women as most female voters chose the party.
