YAN: Gurun assemblyman Dr Leong Yong Kong will be appointed Kedah state executive councillor to fill the MCA quota.

Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said the appointment would be made after he received an official notification from MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Speaking at the MCA operations room for the Sungai Limau by-election here, Mukriz said the decision to appoint Dr Leong was made following a resolution passed by the MCA extraordinary general meeting to allow party members to accept state government and local council posts.

MCA delegates denied motions to reverse the party's rejection of Cabinet posts at the EGM on Oct 20.

Earlier, speaking to reporters after meeting educators from the Kuala Muda and Yan districts, Mukhriz said he had written to Dr Chua, asking whether the state government could appoint an MCA assemblyman as state executive councillor.

"In his reply, the MCA president said let's wait for the outcome of the party EGM. I hope I will get the notification soon," said Mukhriz.

Apart from Dr Leong, another MCA assemblyman in Kedah is Chua Thiong Gee (Kulim).

Mukhriz had said that an MCA representative would hold the environment, Chinese Affairs, Health and Unity Committee portfolio. Kedah now has nine state executive councillors, including the mentri besar.
