KOTA KINABALU: More powers have been given to the Education Departments of Sabah and Sarawak to speed up various projects such as the construction of new schools in both states.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Education Ministry would be dispatching its technical officers to both states to assist the departments overseeing the implementation of the projects.
"We will start this gradually and over time the scope of the projects concerned will expand," he said after meeting some 800 teachers-to-be from the four training institutes in Sabah here.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the projects under the departments would include those involving school maintenance works as well.
"We will be drawing a new key performance index to incorporate the implementation of these projects," he said.
He said the ministry channeled nearly RM16mil to the Sabah Education Department for immediate maintenance and repair works at dozens of schools throughout the state.
"Of this amount RM3mil will be used for urgent repair works at 33 schools while the remaining amount will go towards maintenance works,” he said.
"We are aware of the need for improvement in education infrastructure in Sabah apart from providing more schools and equipment. We are working on these improvements," Muhyiddin added.
