KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are still monitoring the activities of two groups, Sabah Atap and OTAI, for alleged involvement in secret socieity activities.
Sabah Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said initial investigations showed that the two registered bodies were not involved in violent crimes but were more looking after welfare of members.
However, certain individuals have been using the two names for secret socieity activities.
Bukit Aman had wanted the Registrar of Societies to strike out from its roll Sabah Atap and Otai, which were among 49 secret societies named by the Home Ministry.
It has advised two other organisations, which were also using the same names but registered in 2012 and 2013, to change to other names to avoid confusion and suspicion among the public.
Police have detained a total of 1,112 individuals for various offences under Ops Cantas Khas in Sabah since Aug 17.
Hamza said a total of 3,414 individuals were checked during 1,027 raids where police also recovered Samurai swords, parang, knuckle dusters and knives.
"Our operations are on going, we may adopt different methods under Ops Cantas to catch those involved in secret societies and serious crimes,’’ he added.
On another incident, Hamza said that police were investigating a 32-year-old policeman who lost his revolver to thieves for negligence. He said police recovered pistol and 23 bullets following the arrest of two suspects in Kota Marudu on Wednesday.
