GEORGE TOWN: The making of the controversial film Tanda Putera is a sheer waste of funds on a project that distorts history, says Lim Guan Eng.
The DAP secretary-general claim-ed that the government-funded movie had been used as a tool to “malign and demonise” the entire Chinese community.
“The movie is pure rubbish and depicts a sorry attempt to change history to serve the agenda of a select few,” he told news portal The Malaysian Insider yesterday.
Lim was responding to comments by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz who had said that only a few Chinese individuals were responsible for the May 13 riots in 1969.
Nazri also said the film, which he described as well-researched, reflected the “reality” of the turbulent period in Malaysia’s history.
Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said Tanda Putera is “a dangerous fiction created to cause racial disharmony, to demonise a community and a symbol of disrespect to those who lost their lives in the riot” 44 years ago.
The Penang Government had earlier issued an advisory to cinemas in the state not to screen the movie.
