Mental check for man accused of stabbing beautician

JOHOR BARU: An unemployed man charged with stabbing a beautician to death has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Toh Kian Peng, 37, was charged with stabbing beautician Liew Oi Mei, 39, with a knife at Jalan Indah 1/1, Taman Bukit Indah, here, at around 11.30am on Aug 17.

Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias ordered Toh to be examined following his inability to understand the charge that was read out to him in Mandarin.

Toh’s lawyer, Muhammad Ashraff Mohd Diah, concurred with the order, adding that family members of the accused mentioned that Toh had

been suffering from hallucinations.

Toh was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. Mohd Azlan set the next mention on Sept 30.

Liew was killed by three robbers who had entered her shop under the pretext of being customers.
