SUNGAI PETANI: A Year Six pupil drowned in a disused mining pool in Kampung Baru Thye Eng in Semeling, near here, after falling while trying to retrieve her slipper.

Nur Atikah Mahadzir’s (pic) body was found by an angler 45 minutes after she fell into the pool at about 5pm on Wednesday.

Nur Atikah had gone to the pool with four others to meet a cousin who was fishing there.

Friend Nur Najwa Mohd Ahair, 14, said the group was walking along the bank when Nur Atikah slipped and one of her slippers fell into the pool.

She said Nur Atikah lost her balance and fell in while trying to retrieve the slipper.

She said the incident happened so fast that they were not able to grab hold of Nur Atikah.

Nur Najwa said several youths who were in the vicinity jumped into the pool but were not able to save the girl.

Fisherman Mohd Sofi Md Zain, 36, said he dived several times into the pool before he found Nur Atikah’s body.

“Her body was covered in mud and her nose was bleeding,” he said.

Mohd Sofi said the abandoned mining pool was a popular place with anglers

Nur Atikah’s body was sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here for a post-mortem before being buried at the Bedong Muslim Cemetery yesterday.

She was a student of SK Seri Aman Bedong near here.
