KUCHING: Driver negligence and bad condition of vehicles due to poor maintenance are the main factors of accidents on the Pan-Borneo trunk road, said Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof.
He said blaming road conditions of the Pan-Borneo road as the cause of accidents was inaccurate.
"According to reports, several accidents on the Pan-Borneo road have been due to drivers' negligence, poor vehicle conditions or the drivers not adhering to road safety guidelines like exceeding the speed limit," he said on Sunday.
Fadillah was asked to comment on two fatal road accidents on the Pan-Borneo trunk road, which brought the death roll to 10 within less than a month.
Asked whether the Ministry planned to station officers at the accident hotspots along the road, Fadillah said this was difficult to be implemented due to the shortage of staff and not practical.
"What can be done now is for road users to assist by reporting if they have information on any damaged stretch of the road.
"This will also help the Public Works Department (PWD) to ensure that the company appointed to maintain the road carries out its tasks well," he said, adding that reports could be made through the PWD website or directly to him.
Fadillah also urged road users to observe road safety, especially during the festive season."All road users, whether pedestrians or drivers of light or heavy vehicles should be careful, follow the safety orders and ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before starting their journey. This is important not just for their own safety but the safety of all road users," he said. - Bernama
