BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Kedah Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) has seized 98 slabs of substance believed to be cannabis worth RM245,000.

The slabs were hidden in a Proton Wira driven by a 19-year-old who was stopped at a UPP roadblock on Wednesday evening near the Thai border, said Kedah UPP commander Abd Latif Abdul Rahman.

“The teenager alighted from the car to open the boot for inspection while the UPP personnel asked him to produce his MyKad,” he said.

“However, when they were about to inspect the backseat, he fled the scene on foot.”

The unit found the substance, weighing 96.6kg, as well as a passport believed to be the driver’s.

“A police dog unit searched for him, but was unsuccessful,” he said.

Abd Latif said police were now looking for Norizdhan Faridzuan Yazet to shed light on the matter.

He said those with information could contact the Kubang Pasu police at 04-917 6999 or 04-917 2222.

In an unrelated case, the unit seized more than RM5,000 worth of imitation goods from two lorries at Jalan Kota Putra, Durian Burung near Kuala Nerang, on Friday.

Among the items were fake designer T-shirts and jeans as well as imitation Indonesian batik sarong.

Abd Latif said most of the items were handed over to the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry while the sarong were forwarded to the Customs Department for further action.
