Child conversion: Mandate on amendment with Jamil Khir Baharom, says Joseph Kurup

PUTRAJAYA: The mandate concerning the proposed amendment to Section 107(B) of the Administration of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 to allow just one parent to convert children to Islam has been handed to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the matter was decided after the Cabinet meeting last Friday.

"The government is well aware and concerned about the views of the people from different religion and culture.

"Therefore, the government is very concerned of the fear from some non-Muslim people and non-governmental organisations of the section," he said in a press statement on Monday.

He said Jamil Khir would make an announcement on the matter soon.

In ALOR SETAR, Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said the movement would challenge the proposed amendment as it breached Article 12(4)of the Federal Constitution.
