Parents banking babies’ UCB with private storage facilities

PETALING JAYA: More than 80,000 parents have signed up for private cord banking as a health insurance policy for their young children.

Mostly young urban couples, these parents are prepared to pay an initial enrolment fee of about RM2,500 to store their babies’ umbilical cord blood (UCB) right after birth, in hope that the stem cells derived from the cord blood will benefit their children in future. Storage is for up to 20 years and parents are charged about RM250 annually.
