KAJANG: A painter was charged in a magistrate’s court here with murdering his mother last month.

The charge against Chai Kim Tham was translated to him in Hakka before magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin yesterday.

Chai, 42, is accused of murdering 59-year-old Liew Kim Thai at a house in Kampung Baru Semenyih on May 25 at about 12.44am.

He is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Chai was unrepresented and no plea was recorded.

DPP R. Siamalah told the court that the post-mortem report was not ready.

The magistrate fixed July 22 for mention of the case.

It was reported that Chai had assaulted his mother after an argument over the use of the air-conditioner.

Liew’s husband, who had declined to be named, claimed his wife and son had had a strained relationship and that Chai had often asked his mother for money and this led them to frequently quarrel.
