THE issue of the alleged blackout in Bentong on May 5, posted by Astro AEC show host Gan Jiang Han on his Facebook page, continues in major Chinese dailies with MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai expressing his unhappiness.

Sin Chew Daily quoted Liow as saying the posting had misled the people into believing there was a blackout at the Bentong counting centre, which allegedly led to the Barisan Nasional winning the parliamentary seat.

“This is false. To me, it is character assassination,” said Liow, who defended the seat against DAP challenger Wong Tack.

Gan got the channel into hot water when he posted on his Facebook that “when my child is born, I will ask him to write an essay with the title, The Blackout Night. The beginning of the essay would be on May 5, 2013, there was a stiff fight in the Bentong seat. Someone had said that he would cut his ears if it is lost, and then the counting process started, blackout...”

Several reporters as well as Bilut assemblyman Chow Yu Hui, from the DAP, clarified later there was no blackout which allegedly led to the sudden “appearance” of a ballot box.

Bentong MCA Youth called for an investigation into the alleged occurrence and its chief Leong Kim Soon urged action to be taken against those spreading such false information.

Tebrau MCA organising secretary Ng Yew Aik has lodged a police report over Gan’s Facebook posting and urged the show host to clarify his statement to the press.

Ng added that although Gan had apologised and deleted the posting, there were still many people who believed the rumour.
