KUALA LUMPUR: It's nomination day today for candidates to file their papers to contest in the May 5 general election, set to be one of the most fiercely contested in the country's history.

Up for grabs are 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats. Aspiring candidates must put in their application by 10am.

1.20pm: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng will be challenged by MCA lawyer Tan Ken Keong, 41, in the Air Putih state seat. Both were announced as candidates when nomination closed. The Sibu Parliamentary seat is a three-cornered fight between BN-SUPP (Vincent Lau Lee Ming), DAP (Oscar Ling) and an Independent candidate (Narawi Haron).

1.15pm: Total number of confirmed candidates for parliamentary seats stands at 340 and 655 for state seats. Only 140 of the 222 parliamentary seats and 286 of the 505 state seats have confirmed their candidates.

1.00pm: After a three-hour wait, Returning officer for P163 Kulaijaya finally announced the parliamentary candidates - Teo Nie Ching (DAP), Tay Chin Hein (MCA) and K. Surendiran (Independent).

1.00pm: It is a four-cornered fight for the Lahad Datu state seat. Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Yusof Apdal, younger brother of Datuk Shafie Apdal, faces Aliandu Enjil (SAPP), Hamid Awong (PKR) and Ariffin Hamid (STAR)

1.10pm: Najib says Umno members who contest as Independents will be sacked immediately: letters to go out on Monday

1.00pm: Wanita Umno vice-chairman Datuk Kamelia Ibrahim said Saturday on her Facebook page that she is quitting all her party posts. Kamelia, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member and Wanita head for Kuala Kangsar, is standing as an Independent for the Kuala Kangsar parliament seat.

12.55pm: Independent candidate Yee Poh Ping has joined the fray for Kepong, making it a three-cornered fight for the parliamentary seat with DAP seven-term incumbent Dr Tan Seng Giaw and first-time BN candidate Datuk A. Chandrakumanan.

12.50pm: The Sungai Siput parliamentary and the Jalong state seats will see three-cornered fights. MIC vice president Datuk S.K Devamany is the candidate for the parliamentary seat, while incumbent Dr Michael Jeyakumar from Parti Sosialis Malaysia, who is standing under the PKR ticket. The independent candidate is first timer S.P Nagalingam, 46, a businessman whose application to contest for the Lintang state seat was rejected as his proposer was not a voter in the Lintang constituency. As for the Lintang state seat Sungai Siput Umno division chief Datuk Zolkafly Harun will contest against the opposition candidate for Lintang is Ahmad Mazlan Othman from PAS. Independent candidate for the Jalong state seat S. Kalimuthu, 53, a former Gerakan member will contest against Barisan candidate Liew Yew Aw and Loh Sze Yee from DAP.

12.50pm: Maimun Yusof or Tok Mun the country's most famous independent candidate, is back again in the general elections. The 94-year-old grandmother made headlines in 2008 for contesting the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat will do so again in the GE13.

12.50pm: The Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats will see a three-cornered fight with two independent candidates joining in the 13rd general election. S. Vijayan, 42, and P. Bernard, 36, both businessmen, will be contesting the Pasir Panjang and Pangkor state seats respectively. Vijayan will contest Barisan Nasional's Rashidi Hashim and PAS' Rohawati Abidin and Bernard will go against PKR's Mohd Saifullah Mohd Zulkifli and Barisan's Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who is the incumbent state Mentri Besar.

Meanwhile, incumbent Lumut MP Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha will be defending his Lumut parliamentary constituency, against PKR's Laksamana Pertama (R) Imran Abdul Hamid. Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham from DAP and Barisan's new face Ting Tai Fook will be contesting the Sitiawan state seat.

12.50pm: Umno has sacked former deputy minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar immediately for contesting as an independent candidate in the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat. State Umno chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said there was no need to inform Mohd Shariff via letter that he had been sacked. "It is an automatic sack for Umno members who stand against party candidates," he said. Mohd Shariff, a former Penang Deputy Chief Minister, has served as assemblyman and Tasek Gelugor MP for six terms.

12.50pm: Pagoh: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be facing PAS candidate Mohd Rozali Jamil for the Pagoh parliamentry seat while Datuk Dr Shahruddin Salleh (BN) will face Nor Hayati Bachok (PAS) and Ismail Mohamed (BN) will face Saadun Abdullah from PKR for Bukit Serampang state seat.

12.15pm: Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat will see a three-cornered fight with Umno Wanita vice chairman Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim joining the fray as an Independent against BN and PAS. BN is represented by Datuk Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad while PAS is represented by Drs Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah.

12.10pm: Shah Alam parliamentary seat - Straight fight between PAS' Khalid Samad and BN's Datuk Zulkifli Noordin

12.10pm: Pakatan allies PAS and PKR will do battle for the Sungai Acheh state seat in a three-way fight which includes Barisan incumbent assemblyman Datuk Mahmud Zakaria from Umno. PKR maverick politician Badrul Hisham, popularly known as Chegu Bard, PAS Youth chairman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah and Mahmud submitted their papers at the nomination centre this morning.

11.55am: Alor Setar: Chor Chee Heung (BN), Gooi Hsiao Leong (PKR), Ahmad Fisol Isa (Berjaya), Jawahar Raja Abdul Wahid (Bersama)

11.50am: Penang: Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituency: the candidates are Zairil Khir Johari (DAP) and Teh Leong Meng (BN). Air Putih state seat - candidates are Tan Ken Keong (BN) and Lim Guan Eng (DAP). Tanjung Bungah state seat - candidates are Teh Yee Cheu (DAP), Beh Siong Leng (independent) and Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye (BN) Kebun Bunga state seat - candidates are Hng Chee Wey (BN), K. Jayaraman (independent) and Cheah Kah Peng (DAP) . Pulau Tikus - candidates are Yap Soo Huey (DAP) and Rowena Yam (BN)

11.40: Sabah-Keningau: Incumbent Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan is being challenged by his younger brother Datuk Dr Jeffrey of Sabah STAR and PKR's Ahmad Shah Tambakauand an independent Ricky Sodomon for the parliament seat. Pairin, who is state deputy chief minister, is also Barisan's candidate for Tambunan state seat where he is in a four-corner fight while his brother is also in a four cornered fight for the Bingkor state seat.

11.30am: Pasir Mas parliamentary seat: Straight fight between Perkasa founder Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali against Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, son of PAS spiritual adviser Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

11.30am: Three-way fight in Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat between PKR's Nurul Izzah Anwar, BN's Raja Datuk Nong Chik Zainal Abidin and independent Rusli Baba

11.30am: The Tanjong parliamentary seat will pit Penang DAP Socialist Youth chief Ng Wei Aik against Barisan's newcomer Ng Song Kheng, a marketing director from party Gerakan. Incumbent Padang Kota assemblyman Chow Kon Yeow will defend his seat against Penang Barisan Nasional Youth chief Oh Tong Keong. The Komtar seat will see a three-corner fight between DAP's Teh Lai Heng, an aide of Chow, Barisan's MCA candidate Loh Chye Teik and Parti Cinta Malaysia's Liew Yeow Hooi. The Pengkalan Kota seat will see incumbent Lau Keng Ee squaring off with Barisan's newcomer Loke Poh Chye, a chartered accountant from MCA.

11.15am: Kota Baru: Returning officer Fauzi Mat announces the names of candidates: - Datuk Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh (BN), Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (Pas), Mohd Zakiman Abu Bakar (ind), Kanidy Omar (BN), Rohani Ibrahim (Pas) Tanjong Mas - Tan Ken Ten (BN), Mohd Zakiman Abu Bakar (ind), Datuk Anuar Tan Abdullah (Pas) Kota Lama - Mohd Fakhurazi Abdul Abdul Rahim (BN) and Dr Ramli Mamat (PAS)

11.00am: DAP's Sim Tong Him is defending the Kota Melaka state under the DAP banner but filed as an Independent for the Kota Laksmana seat. State DAP officials confirmed he has been expelled from party for contesting as an independent. His contender is MCA's new face Dr Yee Kok Wah, Sim is still in nomination center at SMK Padang Temu.

10.50am: Pas has placed a spoiler in Kota Damansara state seat, where there will be a five-cornered fight, when one of its members filed his candidacy under the party ticket by using a standby letter of appointment. It created chaos among the Opposition.

10.40am: Returning officer for P119 Titiwangsa Abd Halim Ismail announced the candidates - Datuk Johari Abd Ghani (Umno) and Ahmad Zamri Asa'ad Khuzaimi (PAS).

10.30am: Pekan: Datuk Seri Najib will face PKR's Fariz Musa in a straight fight for the Pekan parliamentary seat.

10.30am: Labis, Johor - DAP's candidates for Labis parliament S. Ramakrishnan and Bekok state seat Lim Eng Guan have filed their with nomination papers using DAP logo.

10.07am: Putrajaya returning officer Haitamil Ishak announces the candidates for Putrajaya. They are Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (BN-Umno) and Datuk Husam Musa (PR-PAS).

10.05: The EC has rejected the nomination form of R. Sasikumar 35, who wanted to contest as an Independent for the Mambau state seat after he failed to come up with the cash for the deposit.

10.00am: Nominations closed

9.50am: Gelang Patah Independent Rajandran pulls out after a brief chat with Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman. He is believed to be an MIC member.

9.50am: Five-cornered fight for Teratai state seat - Teratai incumbent Jenice Lee, Pandan Perdana Residents Association chairman Lim Ah Chai and Chin Kok Keong as Independents and BN's Ben Liew and DAP's Tiew Way.

9.45am: The independent candidate for the Gelang Patah constituency is Rajandran A/L Ramasamy, 55. He is an ex military personnel. Meanwhile

9.45am: DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang says he has submitted his application using the Rocket symbol. He said if there are any rejections it will be after the nomination closes at 10am. He said that if any problems they will use the PAS symbol.

9.23am: Hundreds of supporters for both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat gather near Dewan Tun Ali in Bukit Katil, which was cordoned off by the police. PKR candidate Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin entered the nomination hall at 8.55am while Umno candidate Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam arrived and entered the hall at 9.15am.

9.20am: It is a 3-way fight for the Kepong parliamentary seat: Dr Tan Seng Giaw (DAP), Datuk Chandrakumanan (BN-PPP) and Yee Poh Ping (independent)

9.19am: Opposition candidates for the Pasir Gudang constituency Ahmad Faidhi Saidi (Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat), Liow Cai Tung (Johor Jaya state seat) and Syed Othman Abdullah (Permas state seat) have successfully filed their nomination forms.

9.10am: Pandan incumbent Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat's previous private secretary Allan Tan Yew Leng, will be contesting as independent for the Pandan parliamentary seat. Tan, who had worked for Ong for over 10 years, said that he had resigned on April 19. "I decided to run for the parliamentary seat because I want to continue the efforts of Ong in servicing the Pandan folks and all the charity organisation. Tan was born in Bukit Pinang, Kedah and has been living in Pandan Jaya for more than 10 years."

9.10am: Former DAP member Jenice Lee arrived at the nomination centre to contest as independent candidate for Teratai state seat. She said she has the backing of Pandan residents.

9.20am: Both Umno and PAS candidates in Titiwangsa submit their nomination forms, both approved by the EC. No independent candidates in Titiwangsa.

9.18am: PAS candidate for Putrajaya, Datuk Husam Musa completes submission of his nomination form.

He then takes pictures with his opponent and incumbent candidate for Barisan, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

9.10am : Barisan Nasional candidate for Bukit Permai state seat has filed his nomination form at the Kulaijaya nomination centre, Johor.

9am: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and BN's four candidates for the state seats under the Pekan parliamentary constituency enter Sultan Ahmad Shah convention hall to submit nomination papers

9.00am: Candidates for Jasin file their papers. Jasin has five state seats, Bemban, Rim, Serkam, Merlimau and Sungai Rambai. Its Barisan state candidates are Datuk Ng Choon Koon (MCA) and Umno's Datuk Ghazale Muhamad, Zaidi Atan, Roslan Ahmad and Datuk Hassan Abdul Rahman. Its Pakatan state candidates are N. Gandhi (DAP), Azmi Khamis (PKR) and PAS' Kamaruddin Sidek, Yuhaizad Abdullah and Kintan Man.

8.50am: BN candidates for Selayang as well as its three state seats arrived at nomination centre. The candidates are Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai (selayang), Lee Li Yew (Rawang), Shukur Idrus and Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal (Tmn Templer)

9am: PAS supporters arrive with 5 candidates including Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Arifin Deraman and Sulaiman Sulong. Crowd is chanting slogans as candidates use a side door to avoid BN group

8.50am: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who is the Marang and Ru Rendang candidate, arrives at the Marang nomination centre.

8.45am Gombak Barisan candidates arrive at nomination centre in Dewan Mutiara Gombak SMK Sungai Pusu with supporters. Surprise candidate for Dun Batu Caves Suman Gopal 27 and for Parliament Datuk Said Nazar Abu Baker, 42.

9.15: KAPIT: BN-PRS candidate Wilson Ugak Kumbong for Hulu Rajang was refused entry into the nomination until he changed his party shirt. Ugak changed his shirt outside the gate but rather annoyed with the EC new rule.

9.08am: Gelang Patah: Johor Gerakan chief Datuk Teo not allowed to accompany the Barisan Nasional candidates and turned away as he did not have the necessary pass.

9.00am: Pagoh: Some 3000 Umno supporters accompany Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is defending the Pagoh parliamerntary seat to the Pagoh sport complex in Pagoh today. Muhyiddin arrives with Jorak state seat candidate, incumbent Datuk Dr Shahruddin Salleh and new face Ismail Mohammed, the candidate for Bukit Serampasng state seat to the nomination centre at 9am

8.50am: Setiawangsa PKR candidate Ibrahim Yaacob and his supporters wait at the police barricades to be let into nomination centre. Many of them are chanting slogans. UMNO candidate not here yet

8.45am: Ampang candidates arrive shouting 'reformasi' at Dewan Dato Ahmad Razali.

8.45am: Both candidates from Titiwangsa Umno Datuk Johari Abd Ghani and Titiwangsa PAS Ahmad Zamri Asa'ad Khuzaini have arrived at the same time at the nomination centre at SMK Aminuddin Baki, Jalan Kampung Pandan.

0847am: Allan Tan Yew Leng, who was Ong Tee Keat private secretary has resigned and now will contest as independent candidate for the Pandan parliamentary seat. He has arrived outside the nomination hall.

8.30am: Independent candidate for Sepang Hanapiah Mohammed is the first to arrive at Sepang

8.43am: Simpang Sanglang Umno branch chief Zainudin Yom, who said he will be contesting in Arau parliamentary and Sanglang state seat, spotted at Dewan Sivik Arau.

8.45am Barisan Nasional's candidate for Shah Alam Zulkifli Noordin has arrived the nomination centre ahead of his rivals.

8.45: Alor Setar - Shouts of "Hidup Barisan" rang through the entourage of supporters accompanying Barisan candidates on their way to nomination centres.

8.45am- Hundreds of Barisan Nasional supporters and candidate Tan Kok Eng arrive at Bandar Tun Razak nomination centre while singing the 'Barisan Kita' song.

8.45am: Gopend: An independent candidate has arrived outside the nomination centre, contesting N43 Sungai Rapat, freelance photographer Meor Azman.

8.46am: Gekang Patah: Lim Kit Siang, Dr Boo Cheng Hau and Salehuddin Ayob arrive at the nomination centre. Barisan Nasional's Abdul Ghani Othman arrives a few minutes later. Both sides are accompanied by a lion dance troupes. Both waiting for hall to open to file their papers.

8.40am, About 2,000 Tapah Barisan Nasional supporters join Datuk M. Saravanan, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and Datuk Samsudin Abu Hassan as they march from the Barisan headquarters towards the nomination centre.

8.35am: Pakatan Rakyat candidates for PJU, Damansara Utama and Kampung Tunku, all running under the DAP ticket, are accompanied by some 100 supporters holding both DAP and PAS party flags.

8.40am: Waves of PAS supporters head to their assembly point at a surau about 1km from the nomination centre in Putrajaya.

Supporters from both Barisan and Pakatan sides are assembling at separate locations before marching on to the nomination centre in Precinct 9 before 9am.

8.40 am: A group of about 50 pkr supporters marching towards the p115 batu nomination center shouting 'reformasi". They cannot pass a barrier built 100m away.

8.40am: PKR candidates and about 300 supporters marching to nomination centre. Umno candidates, about 300, singing patriotic songs as they prepare for march to centre which is 50m away.

8.35am: Pakatan Rakyat supporters, waving flags of PKR, DAP and PAS, are joined by members of the Ban Cyanide Action Committee (BCAC) in their march to the Raub nomination centre. BCAC is a NGO that protests against the use of cyanide in gold mining at a site in Bukit Koman.

8.35am: Heavy presence of police and JPAM. PKR and PAS supporters seen gathered at a field nearby nomination centre in Kuala Selangor.

8.26am: Pahang MB Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob has arrived at Bangunan Umno Bahagian Bentong. Most supporters have gathered in front of the building now.

8:27am: Sg Petani, Kedah: A lion dance troupe has joined the BN crowd near the clock tower.

8.20am: A group of PAS supporters for Khairudin Othman of PAS just arrived outside the nomination centre. Khairudin is said to be contesting for Paya Jaras state seat.

8.25am: Groups of Opposition supporters walk up in a procession to the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium. Supporters carry colorful flags and shout out "reformasi, ubah ubah and takbir allah".

8.15am Wangsa Maju BN Umno candidate Datuk Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah starts his march from Masjid Wangsa Melawati with his supporters.

8.20am: Some 100 BN supporters are gathering at SK Bintang Selatan, Cheras.

8.12am: Mobile buses and vans with police personnel stationed around the Pasir Gudang Indoor Stadium where candidates will come to file their nomination forms.

8.20am: Fifty-two-year-old unknown Mohd Anuar Mohd Isa has arrived at Bandar Tun Razak Nomination Centre declaring that he will submit his nomination as an independent candidate. Mohd Anuar is waiting to submit his nomination at the bus-stop outside the DBKL Training Institute in Bandar Tun Razak. He has declined comment further asking reporters to wail until after the nomination period.

8:20am: Tok Mun says she has enough money to submit her nomination forms for Kuala Terengganu seat. She will campaign in towns, villages, on her bicycle and says she wants to serve the people.

8.16am: Gopeng: All BN candidates have arrived outside nomination centre with their supporters.

8.10am Dr Nasir just arrived at the nomination centre with an entourage of about 30 people.

8.15am: Gopeng: A policeman forbids reporters from entering the nomination centre later. An Information ministry officer made phone calls and confirmed reporters can enter.

8.14: KITA party representative from Alor Gajah, S. Ravinther was seen filing nomination form to contest as an Indepedent in Machap constituency.

8.10am: Barisan Nasional and Opposition supporters are starting to gather near RHB Bank, Jalan Besar about 1km from the nomination centre in Kulaijaya, Johor.

8.13am: Security around the central Johor Baru Municipal Council (MPJBT) in Skudai is tight with heavy police presence. Supporters from DAP and Barisan Nasional have started arriving. Police have also placed barbed wires to cordon off the area.

8:05am: 93-year-old Maimun Yusof, or Tok Mun spotted at frontlines in Kuala Terengganu. Tok Mun made headlines in 2008 for contesting the Kuala Teremgganu parliamentary seat as an independent. Unclear yet if she has a sponsor this time around.

8.10am BN supporters start arriving at Kelana Jaya nomination centre. BN candidate for Subang Jaya N31 Gan Meng Foo has also arrived.

8.08am: Things are slowly picking up in Putrajaya, with Barisan and Pakatan supporters trickling in ahead of nomination in Precinct 9.

Barisan supporters are seen wearing the trademark blue shirts while Pakatan supporters donned green shirts in support of PAS which is contesting the parliamentary seat for Pakatan.

8.10am : Gombak setia PAS candidate Ustad Hasbullah Ridzuan arrives at nomination center. Both Barisan and Pakatan supporters began gathering at nearby mosques from 7am to make their way to the centre.

8.10am: The crowd is starting to swell in front of the Pekan Umno building as Barisan Nasional supporters are pouring in.

8.07am: Tambun: Police sealed off road about 100m to the Dewan Seri Keledang. No candidate seen around the area. Only seen Barisan supporters at nearby stalls.

7.15am: Part of Jalan Labis - Segamat has been closed since 6.45am to facilities the nomination process for Labis, Johor.

7.16am: It's an overcast morning in Putrajaya, with little indication that nominations will take place in less than two hours.

People are milling about at the shops in Precinct 9 where the nomination centre is located, going about their morning routine.

6am - MBPJ Enforcement personnel stationed at Jalan Yong Shook Lin and within the PJ New Town outside nomination centre at PJ Civic Centre. Police personnel also present.

6.30am - Election workers start to trickle in.

7am - Pressman allowed to walk up to the cordoned area leading to PJ Civic Centre. MBPJ Enforcement staff in dark blue uniforms are seen patrolling the area outside Civic Centre.
