NEW DELHI: Ramli Ibrahim became the first Malaysian to win the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2011.
It is the highest national honour conferred on performing artistes in India.
Ramli, 59, received the award from Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at a special ceremony held at the Presidential House yesterday.
Thirty-five other artistes from different fields received the award as well.
The award is in recognition of Ramli's contributions to the Odissi, said to be one of the oldest Indian dance forms.
“Being the first Malaysian to receive the prestigious award is something to be treasured,” said Ramli, who is Malaysia's most noted dancer and choreographer in Indian classical dance. -- Bernama
