GEORGE TOWN: Tourism Ministry will bear the translation cost of a Mandarin documentary on the life of Penang's first Chief Minister, the late Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee, into Bahasa Malaysia and English.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the translation of the documentary, available in DVD, would be carried out by Penang Khek Association.
“I would like to thank the Federation of Hakka Associations of Malaysia deputy president Datuk Dr Cheah See Kian for creating a very important heritage tourism site for Penang.
“I would also like to thank Wong's son Peter for his efforts in helping to keep the memory of his late father alive,” she said after visiting the memorial hall dedicated to Wong at the Malaysia Hakka Heritage Centre yesterday.
The memorial hall in the Penang Khek Association building in Burmah Road was launched on Saturday.
Dr Ng said every Malaysian had to “think tourism and act tourism” to develop the industry.
“The industry is moving towards a higher-end', knowledge-based tourism, focusing on history and heritage,” she said, adding that Penang was fortunate as George Town had been declared as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
“Now, Penang has this hall as an additional value,” she said, urging the association to consider entrance fees in order to self-sustain.
“The fees can go into a fund to maintain the hall,” said Dr Ng, adding that there was also a need for trained tour guides to provide information to visitors.
“I will ask the Penang director for Tourism Malaysia to discuss with Dr Cheah to include the hall as one of the places to visit on the heritage trail,” she said.
Dr Cheah said 1,500 DVDs of the documentary would be sold to visitors, of which 500 would be in Mandarin, English and Bahasa Malaysia each.
