PETALING JAYA: Their passion for food and a desire to raise awareness on eye diseases prompted an ophthalmologist and a dietician to literally create “food for the eyes”.

The husband-and-wife team of Dr Kenneth Fong Choong Sian and Goo Chui Hoong has come up with Food for Your Eyes a book that highlights basic facts about common eye diseases, including Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and how food can help prevent or reduce the risk of blindness.

The book contains over 50 recipes from breakfast right up to dinner and dessert, all home-made recipes created by Goo. Each of them has been tried and tested at the couple's home.

Dr Fong said AMD was the leading cause of blindness among those aged 60 and above.

“My patients always ask me what they can or cannot eat,” he said. “There are also a lot of myths about what is good and what is not for certain eye problems.

“We came out with this book to share healthy tips. It also educates the public about the common eye diseases,” he said during the book launch at At19 Culinary Studio here yesterday. “It took us about a year to come up with the book.”

“The recipes are simple, easy to read and easy to make,” said Goo, adding that the recipes were mainly Asian-based.

Dr Fong said royalties from the book sales would be donated to the National Council for the Blind, Malaysia (NCBM) to help increase awareness and prevention of eye diseases.

He and Goo later presented the initial sales proceeds of RM3,000 to NCBM president Jasmine Khoo.

The Star's managing editor June Wong said Dr Fong and Goo were natural teachers which meant that the book was instructional in an easy and accessible way.

“It also shows how easy it is to incorporate eye-healthy ingredients into everyday meals,” she added.

Food for Your Eyes is available at local major bookstores at RM39.90 each.

The English-Chinese bilingual book will also be sold in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong at a later date. It is published by Star Publications (M) Bhd.
