Old stories come alive in former opium den

GEORGE TOWN: The building that once housed The Star's head office in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling here was an opium den.

“I was tasked with negotiating with the late tycoon Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew to buy this building,” recalled Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director Tan Sri Kamal Hashim, who has fond memories of the days the newspaper started in a rented building in Weld Quay in 1971.
