GEORGE TOWN: A solemn atmosphere prevailed as hundreds of people lined up to pay their last respects to Toh Puan Goh Sing Yeng, wife of the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.

Many were seen sobbing when bidding farewell to Goh at her residence in Jalan Haji Sudin in Tanjung Bungah.

Goh died at 11.01am at her house on Tuesday, a day after Chong Eu's birthday on May 28. She was 93.

After a morning chanting session that was jointly conducted by four Tibetan monks and three Mahayana monks from the Than Hsiang Temple, the casket was closed at 11.30am.

Six state assemblymen - Lim Hock Seng, Phee Boon Poh, Teh Yee Cheu, Ng Wei Aik, Koay Teng Hai and Koid Teng Guan - then placed a state flag on the casket as a token of respect.

Among those who paid their last respects were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Penang Barisan chairman Teng Chang Yeow and Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce president Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping.

Following a cortege procession led by school bands from SMJK Heng Ee, SMJK Bayan Jaya and SMK Kheng Tean, the hearse carrying Goh's coffin left for the Batu Gantong crematorium at 1.11pm yesterday.

Her ashes are expected to be put in an urn today and be brought back to her home, to be placed beside Dr Lim's.
