LONDON: Crystal Cha is a few steps away from achieving her dream of becoming a globetrotting Malaysian ambassador and needs the support of her fellow Malaysians to do it.

The 21-year-old from Kuala Lumpur is in Britain for Your Big Year 2012 annual competition. This is an international search for a champion to foster the entrepreneurial spirit, bring ideas and people together to effect greater change.

She has already gone far, being in the top 16 out of 60,000 applicants from 221 countries, and the coming week will be crucial as the competition heats up in the final stages in Liverpool.

“I want to keep the Malaysian flag flying high because I truly believe that we have something to offer to the world. I also want to inspire young Malaysians to dream bigger than ever before,” said the bubbly communications executive.

“As I aim to be an envoy for this cause I am passionate about, I know this is not a solo effort. A good showing of confidence for my candidacy in this race will help a lot.”

In the next few days, Cha will compete in various entrepreneurial tasks that will stretch and test her abilities.

“Going into the final stages, I will give my all to win this, not just for myself but for my family, friends and country,” she said.

Her performance will be evaluated by a committee of judges, but there is an online poll for the public to lend their support.

Another Malaysian, Michael Teoh, won the inaugural contest last year and went on to visit 22 countries over the past year, meeting a wide range of people from the severely-underprivileged to world leaders, and championing global citizenship, social responsibility and entrepreneurship through volunteerism.

Your Big Year is organised by Smaller Earth, an organisation providing niche work and travel programmes around the world and is a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, which is endorsed by world leaders including US President Barack Obama and former British prime minister Gordon Brown.

The winner of the competition will be announced on March 17. To vote for Cha, log on to http://www.yourbigyear.com/static/public_vote/1.
