ALOR SETAR: A backhoe driver, who paid a late night visit to his ex-wife, ran amok when she refused to open the door, and torched the woman's car before stabbing her to death.
Fortune-teller Ung Siew Lin, 46, who sustained injures to her head, body and arms, died at the scene.
Also injured in the attack were her eldest daughter Wong Chiew Ying, 26, who suffered a broken left arm, and foster daughter Ch'ng Sheve Mei, 26, who had head injuries and broken right arm. Both were admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here.
Kota Setar acting OCPD Supt Baharom Abu said the incident occurred at 12.17am Friday at Ung's house on Jalan 6, Taman Saga here.
He said the man, aged 54, became angry when Ung refused to open the door and set fire to her Perodua MyVi parked in front of the house.
The man, who was armed with a parang, then broke into the house through the back door.
Ung was in the house with their three daughters and Chn'g at that time. They ran out through the front door on seeing him but he caught up with them and attacked Ung, Chiew Ying and Ch'ng.
The other two daughters, Chew Shen, 22 and Chew Wei, 21, managed to escape.
Supt Baharom said the suspect stabbed Ung repeatedly on the front porch of the house.
He said firemen, who came to put out the car fire, sprayed water at the man to calm him down before neighbours apprehended him. The suspect was injured during the arrest.
Neighbours also helped send the injured daughters to the hospital but the woman died before the ambulance arrived.
Supt Baharom said initial investigations showed that the couple had divored three years ago but the man kept disturbing his ex-wife.
He said Chiew Ying was reported to be in stable condition while Ch'ng was reported to be in critical condition at the hospital's intensive care unit.
