THE Government has distributed RM580.75mil to solve food security issues since 2008, Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar said.

He said the allocation was disbursed under the national Food Security Policy aimed at increasing production of food crops and livestock while assisting the fishing industry.

“Incentive payments to produce food crops (vegetables and fruits) amounted to RM116.9mil in 2008 while it was RM47.3mil in 2009,” he said when replying to Mohd Nor Othman (BN–Hulu Terengganu) during question time.

Mohd Nor wanted to know the amount of agriculture incentives given in 2009 and 2010.

He also wanted to know whether it had helped increase food production.

Noh also said the Government had allocated RM208mil in 2008 for the livestock sector.

The figure was RM84.15mil in 2009.

“In 2008, RM108.84mil was refunded for 7,549 claims in the fishing industry. There were 706 claims in 2009, with RM16.65mil distributed,” he said.
