THERE shall be no age limit for vehicles but all must undergo inspection to determine their roadworthiness before being deemed safe for use.
“We are serious about reducing the number of vehicles as it has a correlation with the number of accidents,” said Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri.
“However, we will not impose any age limit on them.
“All vehicles must undergo inspection to determine their roadworthiness,” he told Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Taiping).
Abdul Rahim also said the ministry had no plan to enforce a vehicle disposal scheme to regulate the number of vehicles.
Nga had asked if the Government would implement any policy, such as that enforced in Singapore, to regulate the number of old vehicles.
“The ministry cannot implement such policies because we have to consider those who buy expensive cars that can last more than 10 years,” said Abdul Rahim.
He said dangerous driving and not aged vehicles had contributed to the high number of accidents, especially during festive seasons.
“We found that motorists who drove dangerously – like speeding – were the main cause of accidents and not the age of the vehicles,” he said, adding that 60% of accidents involved motorcycles.
There were 6,872 road deaths last year, which was an average of 19 deaths a day.
Replying to Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (DAP - Beruas), Abdul Rahim said that up to Aug 31 this year, there were more than 21 million registered vehicles in the country.
> The Government will draft the Syariah Legal Profession Act to strengthen syariah laws, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said.
“Jakim (Malaysian Islamic Development Department) is collaborating with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the Syariah Judiciary Department and the Syarie Lawyers Association to study the details before implementing the Act,” she told Nasharuddin Mat Isa (PAS-Bachok).
