Illegal logging for agar wood continues in forest reserve


GEORGE TOWN: The illegal felling of trees is still ongoing in the forest reserve in Cherok Tokun, Bukit Mertajam and Bukit Panchor, with suspected involvement of foreign syndicates.

Despite the arrest of eight men on Sept 3, all Malaysians, syndicates are carrying out illegal chopping for agar wood to extract gaharu oil, which is sold in the Middle East at RM140 for every 10ml, said Penang state health, welfare, caring society and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.
