MARANG: Former Dungun MP and Umno veteran Datuk Awang Jabbar was killed in a head-on collision between his car and another vehicle early Tuesday.

A foreigner also died in the accident.

It is learnt that Awang, 66, was heading towards Dungun for the Deputy Prime Minister's dialogue with party veterans, when his Mercedes crashed into a Perodua Alza at KM26 of the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan road near Marang, at 7.10am.

Awang, current special advisor to the Mentri Besar on Islamic matters, was in the front seat passenger of his car. His driver Abdul Razak, 67, was injured.

The foreigner, Yemenese national Nesmah Nabil Abdul Karem, 25, was travelling with five other family members to Kuala Terengganu, en route to Pulau Redang.

Terengganu traffic chief Supt Alias Hashim said the injured, including five in the Alza, were sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment.

Awang was Dungun MP from 1978 to 1990, and parliamentary secretary for the Youth and Sports Ministy in 1984.
