SUNGAI PETANI: A group of Umno members staged a protest against the suspension of Sungai Petani chief Ali Yahya, causing its delegates meeting at the Institut Ke-mahiran MARA to be delayed.

The protesters entered the hall after state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Ba-shah Mohd Hanifah went in at 10am yesterday.

They also carried banners questioning the decision of the party’s supreme council in suspending Ali, claiming that their leader had been “sidelined”.

The commotion went on for about 10 minutes before state liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir advised them to “solve problems” as a family. They then left the hall.

The supreme council suspended Ali as division chief in 2009 and directed that it be administered by a committee headed by Mu-khriz.

Later, Ahmad Bashah told reporters that although there was some disquiet among its members, the situation was under control and that the meeting had gone smoothly.

Mukhriz said he was confident that problems faced by the divi-sion could be resolved soon. — Bernama
