JOHOR BARU: The High Court here increased the sentence of an unemployed man who stabbed his lover repeatedly and splashed her with acid by two years and three strokes of the rotan.
Habin Noor Sulaiman, 43, was sentenced to 17 years’ years jail and five strokes of the rotan by the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court on Jan 3 for the offences.
He was charged with attempting to murder 17-year-old Nurain Ashikin Jemedi at the victim’s house in Kg Baru Sg Redan, Kota Tinggi, at around 9.15am on Dec 16 last year.
He was also charged with stabbing and splashing acid on her at the same venue, time and date.
Habin was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder for the first offence and Section 326 for causing grievous hurt for the second offence.
Hussin Othman, who represented the accused, appealed to Justice Abdul Halim Aman for a lighter sentence.
“The accused had pleaded guilty and he was not represented when the case was prosecuted at the Sessions Court,” he said.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Iskandar Ahmad asked that a reasonable sentence be imposed.
“The appeal against the sentence should be rejected as the offence was serious,” he said.
In passing judgment, Justice Abdul Halim said this would be a lesson to the accused and others.
“His actions were cruel, brutal and inhumane,” he said when increasing Habin’s sentence to 19 years’ jail for the first offence and 17 years’ jail and eight strokes of the rotan for the second.
He also ordered for the sentences to run concurrently.
