DPM: Subsidy expected to double this year to RM20.58bil

PUTRAJAYA: Government subsidy is expected to double this year to RM20.58bil due to rising price of petroleum products.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the subsidy for petroleum products - RON 95 petrol, LPG and diesel - could go up to RM18bil this year from RM9.2bil last year.

"We cannot promise there will not be any increase in prices of goods but we are working to control this and the subsidies will stay.

"We (the Government) are subsidising but we cannot sustain the subsidy at the same amount," he told reporters after chairing the first Cabinet committee meeting on supply and prices on Monday.
