KUANTAN: Muslims in Pahang have contributed RM74.6mil in tithes or zakat last year, Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said.

Of the total, RM50.3mil was used to help poor Muslims in the state, he added.

Tengku Abdullah, who is Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Custom Council (MUIP) president, said last year's zakat collection was higher compared with RM66.4mil in 2009.

“I am happy to note that many contributions are from those who have just started working,” he said after attending a tithe collection ceremony from six companies totalling RM5.4mil here on Tuesday.

The companies were the Pahang Pilgrims Fund Board with a total payment of RM2.1mil, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (RM1.6mil), Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia (RM1.3mil), TH Travel Sdn Bhd (RM150,000), Affin Fund Management (RM100,000) and Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (RM100,000).
