KUALA LUMPUR: The Safe City Programme (SCP) will be included as one of key performance indicators of the Local Government and Housing Ministry.

Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning will be in charge of it.

“The ministry will form a Pemandu SCP Committee chaired by me and will consist of several government agencies,” he said during the launch of the Safe City Monitoring System (SCMS) here yesterday.

Some of the agencies involved include the Home Ministry, police, National Anti-Drug Agency, state government and other agencies related to crime prevention.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who was also present at the launch, said authorities can monitor all crime trends using the SCMS right down to every second and minute in high-crime areas.

The police and local authorities can also monitor the effectiveness of the safe city programme in fighting crime.

He hoped the implementation of SCMS would help the rakyat feel safer.

After the launch, Hishammuddin handed over a booklet entitled Police Reporting System Crime Mapping User Manual to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar to mark that the Geographical Information System Operation has been officially used at 42 police stations in crime hotspot areas.
