KUANTAN: The State Election office received official notification of the Kerdau state seat vacancy here on Monday.

Its director Datuk Ismail Mohd Yusoff said his office received the notification at 3pm.

''The notification was immediately faxed to the Election Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

''It will be up to the EC to meet and fix the dates for nomination day and polling day,'' he said when contacted at his office here.

He added that the notification of vacancy for the Pahang state seat was required following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim on Saturday.

Zaharuddin died after a fall in the bathroom and he was suspected to have suffered a heart attack.

It will be the 16th by-election since the March 2008 general election and the third this year.

One was held on Jan 30 for Tenang in Johor, while voters in Merlimau, Malacca will choose their new wakil rakyat on March 6.

Ismail also said the State Election office was ready to spring into action once the dates were fixed.
