JAKARTA: Health Ministry officials here said Tuesday that at least 113 people were killed by a tsunami that pounded villages on remote islands off western Sumatra, after a powerful earthquake struck the area.
The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude quake, which struck 20km beneath the ocean floor late Monday, was expected to climb, with many still missing, and reports about damage and injuries just starting to trickle in the next day.
