SHAH ALAM: Five Selangor PKR assemblymen have announced their endorsement for vice-president Azmin Ali for the party's deputy presidency.

The five were Yaakob Sapari (Kota Anggerik), Dr Xavier Jayakumar (Sri Andalas), Shuhaimi Shafie (Seri Muda), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Seri Setia) and Amirudin Shari (Batu Caves).

In a press conference on Tuesday, they claimed that nine assemblymen from Selangor and four from Negri Sembilan were backing Azmin.

Asked why the group felt Azmin needed backing, Dr Xavier said "lobbying was part and parcel of the democratic process."

The group denied that their endorsement was an attack against PKR supreme council member Datuk Zaid Ibrahim who had also shown interest to contest for the position.

Asked if they would still endorse Azmin in the event that incumbent deputy president senator Dr Syed Husin Ali defended his seat, Yaakob said it was left to be seen.

On Monday, a group of PKR MPs had held a press conference at the party headquarters to show their support Azmin.

However, some MPs in the group had since denied being involved in the endorsement.

It is believed that those involved in the endorsement exercise were from the gang of 15 PKR elected representatives that had tried to initiate a coup against Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in June.
