PETALING JAYA: The Deputy Prime Minister’s office will demand an apology from Malaysiakini for misquoting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as referring to the special inter-faith committee as “small fry”.

It was learnt that Muhyiddin’s office will be writing a “strongly-worded letter” to the news portal, demanding for the apology, and that the notice would be sent tomorrow.

In Kangar, Muhyiddin denied calling the committee “small fry”, stressing that the committee was tasked with the responsibility of promoting understanding and harmony among the people.

He said that he was surprised at Malaysiakini for misquoting him during a press conference in Rawang on Monday.

“I’ve studied the video recording that my officer made and there was no mention of the word. All I did was explain the role of the committee,” he told reporters after meeting leaders of Perlis Barisan Nasional component parties here yesterday.

“I did not speak in English, so I did not use the word small fry. But why did Malaysiakini write like that unless their intention is not good. (Is it) to pit one against another and to downplay the contribution made by parties who wish to help us?” he asked.

Muhyiddin said he did not know the portal’s intention, which had created misunderstanding and downplayed the integrity of the committee members.

Muhyiddin said Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, who is the minister in charge of Islamic Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department, would meet all mufti to explain the inter-faith committee’s role in the next couple of days.

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon welcomed the clarification made by Muhyiddin. “Let us move forward and I believe religious leaders are men of God and have lots of compassion for this country. With the clarification, things are cleared up,” he added.
