KUALA TERENGGANU: The Youth and Sports Ministry wants to name sports arenas in the country after sports personalities.

Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the ministry would propose the names of former and current athletes who deserve to be honoured in appreciation of their achievements.

“We want those who have achieved international fame and carved a special niche in their sports to be recognised under the proposal,” he told reporters yesterday after visiting cycling ace, Anuar Manan at Kuala Ibai.

Ahmad Shabery said his ministry will do a careful evaluation before submitting the proposal to the Cabinet.

He cited Datuk Nicol David as a start.

The main court of the National Squash Centre (NSC), has been officially named after her.

Ahmad Shabery said he would also propose that a road be named after Anuar if he wins the Tour De France later this year.

“As Anuar’s event is not held in a stadium , it’s appropriate to name a road after him,” he added.
