ALOR SETAR: The Government needs to establish a mechanism to distribute alimony aid or special loans to Muslim women caught in divorce wrangles.

Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the mechanism was needed to ensure that ex-husbands would not use the loan as a reason to wash their hands of the responsibilities towards their ex-wives.

Speaking to newsmen after witnessing the swearing-in of 255 local councillors from 12 local councils here yesterday, Azizan also said the Government must provide a detailed explanation to avoid confusion among the people.

He said Kedah would present the matter to the Sultan for his consideration when it received the notification on the aid from the Federal Government.

It was reported that the Government would provide Muslim women caught in divorce wrangles with loans while waiting for their alimony from their ex-husband to be decided by court.

Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom announced that some RM15mil had been allocated for this purpose.
