TANAH MERAH: Vital organs can only be harvested if the heart of the dead person keeps beating. Once the heart stops, only tissues such as corneas, skin, bones and heart valves can be harvested.
In the case of sales executive Tan Se Huai, 36, only his corneas and bones were harvested because his heart had stopped circulating blood to his vital organs. Tan had died of brain haemorrhage.
