MIRI: More than 5,000 people from all walks of life gathered for a Christmas parade in grand style here in what is truly a 1Malaysia spirit.
The crowd thronged the Miri City Fan recreation park for an extravaganza of Christmas carols before taking part in a candlelight parade through the city centre on Saturday night.
The parade, themed “Jesus Christ, the light of the world”, was organised by the churches here in collaboration with the Miri City Council.
Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai described the event as very unique.
“Such gatherings proved that the 1Malaysia spirit is truly alive in this state. The 1Malaysia ideal is being put into practice everyday in this state as can be seen from the crowd that has turned up for this parade,” he told the crowd before flagging off the parade.
Lai said the event received keen response and participation not only from Christians but those from other faiths.
Awang Fuad, from Kuala Belait, was with his wife and two children. They were here for a weekend shopping and decided to join in the parade.
“We just want to be part of the fun. We have many friends in Miri.”
During the event, the crowd donated cash totalling RM11,000 to be given to an orphanage, kidney dialysis centre and cancer palliative care group while the city council gave RM5,000.
The mayor dished out another RM5,000 from his own pocket.
