KUCHING: More than 80 residents whose homes were damaged in a storm in June received compassionate payment totalling RM58,600 from the National Security Council.

One of the recipients, Haswandy Morshidi, said the roof of his house at Bandar Baru Semariang was blown away by strong winds in the incident.

“I was away in Miri at that time. According to my mother-in-law, who was at home with my three children, the wind was so strong that it blew away the roof within minutes.

“Thankfully no one was injured but our belongings were badly damaged by the rain,” he said.

The Malaysia Airlines employee, who received RM3,000, said the roof had now been repaired for about RM10,000.

“I’m glad to receive the money as it will help to relieve my burden,” said Haswandy.

Sixteen people, whose houses were badly damaged in the storm, received RM1,500 each while 59 others got RM500.

The money was handed over by Santubong MP Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He reminded the recipients to use the funds wisely.
