BAKELALAN: Bridges and access in the remote highlands of Sarawak here will be repaired and new ones built, under a tripartite venture involving the army and the federal and state governments.
The Prime Minister’s Department and the Defence Ministry, through their project Jiwa Murni, and the Army Corps have combined resources with the state government to construct bridges and repair rural roads in the rugged regions in the state.
A pioneer project in the highlands in northern Sarawak near Kalimantan is to build 10 steel bridges and repair a stretch of mountainous logging road that is the only access for over 5,000 highland folk.
The pioneer “Bailey Bridge” project in the highlands, some 400km from Miri, was inspected on Saturday by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi, Army chief General Tan Sri Mohd Ismail Jamaluddin, Army chief engineer Brigadier-General Datuk Abdul Nasser, Sarawak Public Utilities Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Bakelalan state assemblyman Nelson Balang Rining.
