JOHOR BARU: A Suaram member claimed trial at a magistrate’s court here for making a false police report.

Cheng Lee Whee, 27, a Johor Baru committee member of the human rights group, was charged with making the false report at Permas Jaya police station here at about 2.33pm on Oct 16 last year.

It is alleged that her false report led to police taking action against another individual and caused trouble to that person.

Her offence is classified under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of six-months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Cheng pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Mohd Fuad Abd Ghani set RM1,000 for bail and Dec 16 for the trial.

The accused posted bail.

Cheng was represented by defence counsels John Fernandez and Hassan Karim, while DPP Amira Sariaty Zainal prosecuted.

The woman was previously arrested for allegedly disseminating false information concerning the demolition of a squatter colony in Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah last year.

She was detained under the Internal Security Act for a day before being released.
