JOHOR BARU: Tan Sri Isa Samad should weigh the possibility of supporting a new candidate for the Bagan Pinang elections, Johor Baru MP Datuk Shahrir Samad said.

He said that if Isa contested, he would definitely win as he had the full support of the community but it would be a good time for him to help pave the way for a generational shift.

“I feel that the decision should lie in the hands of the party,” he said at his Hari Raya open house in Dewan Tebrau here.

“We do not want to be known as a party of senior members or tok, tok (elderly), but we also want to pave the way for the younger generation,” he said.

He said the idea of a generational shift should not only be considered in by-elections like in Bagan Pinang but also at the 13th general election.

“As for the voters in Bagan Pinang, I hope that they will consider a candidate who will be able to help and put their interests forward and has a close relationship with the Federal Government,” he said.

When asked if he thought that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be an adviser for the Government, Shahrir said that he did not think that the former prime minister wanted that position.

“He is already the adviser for both Petronas and Proton.”

In Alor Setar, Dr Mahathir’s son Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said his father was willing to give his advice to the Government whether or not he is given a special post or not.

“My father is always willing to share his experiences with the current Barisan Nasional Government. He is a veteran leader and politician, he still loves the Barisan Government,” the Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister said at the Jerlun parliamentary constituency Hari Raya open house yesterday.

Mukhriz was commenting on a statement made by Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) president Datuk Ibrahim Ali who proposed that Dr Mahathir be appointed adviser to the Government.
