MIC assembly: Lawyer S. Murugesan named sec gen (Update)

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu appointed a youthful team to spearhead the major posts in the party.

He appointed former MIC Youth secretary S. Murugesan, 42, who is a lawyer as the secretary general.

Murugesan who had also contested as the MIC candidate for the Subang parliamentary seat but lost, takes over from Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam who has been elevated to vice president.

Samy Vellu also appointed MIC national economic bureau secretary Datuk Jaspal Singh as the treasurer, taking over from Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk S.K. Devamany who is now a vice president.

The 47-year-old Jaspal is also the coordinator for the construction of the twin tower block for the new MIC headquarters in Bandar Utama.

Both Jaspal and Murugesan were among the 23 members elected into the Central Working Committee in Saturdays party polls

Putera MIC coordinator P. Kamalanathan, 42, has been appointed as the new information chief, taking over from Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan who has also been elevated to vice president.

The party constitution provides Samy Vellu the powers to appoint another seven representatives into the CWC.
