KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of Datuk Seri Idris Jala as a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department is based on his excellent track record in transforming Malaysia Airlines into a successful company, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said Jala’s track record in MAS and Shell made him the ideal person for the post.
“It shows our commitment to achieving our national key results areas and the overall key performance index.
“There is no one in the Government with such a track record ... people will take note of his views as he speaks with authority,” he said when asked to elaborate on his appointment of Jala, after the opening of the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Advisory Council.
As for the impact on the position of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of national unity and performance management Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Najib said Jala would be able to work with Koh.
Jala was also appointed chief executive officer of the Performance Management and Delivery Unit.
Dr Koh will continue with his task of formulating and executing the overall policy and strategies for performance management and organisational transformation with special focus on national key results areas.
In Kuching, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu said Jala’s appointment was a recognition of his abilities, adding that the appointment was based on his merit.
“Jala has proven himself capable in the corporate sector,” he said, noting that Jala had succeeded in turning MAS around in the short time that he had worked there.
He added that Sarawakians were proud to see Jala appointed to the Cabinet.
