KUALA LUMPUR: Book lovers will get to browse through more than 100,000 English, Malay and Chinese book titles at the BookFest@Malaysia from Aug 22 to 31 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

With the theme “Reading is Inspiring”, the event from 10am to 10pm daily will have 509 booths showcasing products from 275 publishing houses, book and stationery distributors from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Britain, Singapore and Malaysia.

“The booths will have various book titles, multimedia products, stationery, music CDs and VCDs with numerous bargains and special discounts,” said Popular Book Company (M) Sdn Bhd executive director Lim Lee Ngoh at the press conference to announce the event yesterday.

Visitors can also expect “sweet deals” at the Weekday Specials from Aug 24 to 28, where 90 exclusive items can be purchased at special prices, she added after a speech by Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung.

Lim said the BookFest, the fourth since 2006, was expected to draw more than 500,000 local and foreign visitors.

She said visitors to the event would also have a chance to buy non-woven bags for only RM3.50 each, RM1 of which would be donated to the Pertubuhan Rumah Amal Cahaya Tengku Ampuan Rahimah orphanage.

The event, which is organised by Popular Bookstore jointly with Sin Chew Media and the MCA Community Education Development Bureau under the party’s lifelong learning secretariat, will also see cooking and baking demonstrations by local chefs for its popular Cook-Out Day activity.

A major highlight will be the Popular-The Star Readers’ Choice Award and the Popular-Berita Harian Anugerah Pilihan Pembaca to recognise outstanding local writers for their contribution to literature and to promote their work.

The 10 winners in each award will be celebrated at the awards ceremony on Aug 26.

The first 100 The Star readers to present the BookFest@Malaysia advertisement published in the newspapers from Aug 17 to 21 will be entitled to redeem a GPS street directory of Klang Valley.

Local Chinese radio station 988, which is the official media partner, will be announcing details and updates of the event.
