KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will have its own television channel soon.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom said the channel, which is expected to be launched within two weeks, will comprise talk and entertainment shows.

He added that the department wants the channel to be of interest to non-Muslims as well.

“The new television channel will help the Government’s efforts to enhance the public’s understanding of Islam,” he told reporters after a working visit at the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation headquarters here yesterday.

It was reported that Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera and Lembaga Tabung Haji would provide financial assistance through equity investments for Jakim’s plans to create the television channel.
