Arrest warrant issued against Mat Sabu and supporters

NIBONG TEBAL: A warrant of arrest has been issued to PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu and his nine supporters for failing to appear in the Jawi Magistrate Court here.

Mohamad, who is also known as Mat Sabu, 54, and the others were to have been at the court yesterday for three days. They were charged on April 16 last year with obstructing policemen from carrying out their duties.

Their lawyers also failed to turn up.

Magistrate Norashikin Mokhtar issued the arrest warrants while the court also sent notices to those who stood bail for the accused. She then fixed June 22 for the case to be mentioned.

It is learnt that one of the lawyers called the court yesterday to say that Mat Sabu and the others would appear in court today to have the warrants cancelled.

The other nine accused are Zamarul Aini Abdul Malek, 37, Zainal Azrun Zainal Abidin, 35, Abdul Rahim Mat Ariff, 58, Md Lazim Osman, 50, Mohd Biyamin Ishak, 44, Fauzi Saharat, 44, Abdul Razak Ramli, 42, Mohd Subri Mohd Said, 42, and Mohamad Salleh, 47.

Mat Sabu was charged with obstructing Supt Mohd Nasir Salleh from arresting him at the Bukit Tambun toll plaza at 7.45pm on Dec 9, 2007, while his supporters were charged with obstructing policemen from taking him into custody.
